Suman Das has been named to the Morris M. Bryan, Jr. Chair in Mechanical Engineering for Advanced Manufacturing Systems in recognition of his international leadership at the forefront of advanced manufacturing research, particularly in the fields of additive manufacturing and nanoscale manufacturing. He is also recognized for his leadership in the development of a proposal for and securing support from the State Governor’s Office to establish the Georgia Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (GIAM), slated to begin operations in 2013. Led by Georgia Tech with an initial thrust on additive manufacturing, the GIAM will be a statewide effort focused on translating manufacturing research discoveries into innovative commercial technologies, products and enterprises.
Suman joined the Woodruff School faculty in 2007 and established the Direct Digital Manufacturing Laboratory (DDM Lab). The DDM Lab is now internationally known for its cutting-edge research aimed at end-use applications in the aerospace, energy, biomedical, and nanotechnology sectors. Research at the DDM Lab has been supported through grants from DARPA, ONR, NRL, NSF, NIH, the Georgia Research Alliance, and industry.
The selection committee was chaired by Levent Degertekin and included Dave McDowell, Bob Guldberg, and Ben Wang.
Congratulations Suman!
